Calabash was rescued from the island of Dominica, where she was cared for by a local rescue partner. She traveled to Brooklyn in late-June 2026.

Meet a young island girl with energy to spare and no interest in slowing down. Cali runs goofy, affectionate, and everywhere-at-once, the kind of dog who wants to be on you, near you, or wrestling a foster sibling at all times. (Her name comes from the calabash, the Caribbean gourd that turns up in every corner of island life, which suits a dog this busy.)
Calabash, Cali for short, came from Dominica with moderate-to-active energy and a personality that runs goofy, affectionate, and eager to please. At home she is a busy, deeply attached companion who would like to be on you, near you, or wrestling one of her foster siblings at all times. Getting her to truly settle with a bone or a toy is still a work in progress, so an adopter who enjoys an engaged, hands-on dog and can keep her body and brain busy will be the right match.
She is a genuine people magnet who loves everyone on sight. She once curled up and napped on a visiting friend's lap, and her signature move is jumping straight up to snuggle whoever is nearby. That enthusiasm spills into some jumping on greeting, especially with strangers, which she's actively working on. She lives happily with other dogs and a cat, so a multi-pet household suits her. She hasn't lived with kids, but she's met children of all ages out and about and taken it all in stride.
On the practical side, she's crate trained, though she likes a treat as her ticket in before she settles. House training is still a work in progress, with about an accident a day as she learns to hold it between breaks. Leash manners are the current project; a head-halter style leash has already made a real difference. Give this island girl exercise, structure, and a lap, and she'll hand you years of affection in return. -
The dogs in our care are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed or neutered (when old enough), microchipped, and given a general health check. Immediate medical needs and medical history will be addressed with the adopter prior to adoption. Complete vet records will be sent shortly after adoption.
